Raytheon and Rafael unveil new multi-mission interceptor "Stunner" at MSPO 2014
Showcased at MSPO 2014 and jointly developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd. and Raytheon Missile Systems, Stunner is an advanced multi-mission interceptor designed for “plug and play” insertion into fielded air and missile defense systems. Stunner is effective against a variety of asymmetric short-range tactical ballistic missiles, inexpensive large caliber rockets, cruise missiles and unmanned aerial systems.

Integrating easily into a variety of engagement scenarios that employ established ground-based, sea-based and air-based sensors, Stunner’s compatibility with established canister and rail launchers offers maximum operational and deployment flexibility. Stunner’s concept of operation requires minimal cueing from sensor resources to ensure optimum rate of fire — even during saturation attacks. Stunner’s modern design inherently fits the future net-centric command and control architectures.

Stunner is an affordable, flexible and lethal hit-to-kill interceptor to defeat mass raids of threats. Stunner’s low price ensures that interceptors can be deployed in sufficient quantities to defend against rapidly increasing numbers of asymmetric threats.

Stunner has already undergone a number of successful tests and is currently under Full Scale Development.

Stunner delivers superior kinematics, maneuverability and lethality by combining novel steering control, multi-pulse propulsion and a next-generation seeker into a lightweight airframe. Stunner intercepts tactical ballistic missiles and large caliber rockets at keep-out altitudes that minimize collateral damage from debris. Stunner’s next-generation seeker detects and tracks the most challenging ballistic missile and air defense threats in all weather while maintaining precision hit-to-kill aimpoint selection at the endgame. Its multi-pulse propulsion and agile steering allow for optimal intercept engagements along threat trajectories, enable real-time retargeting in fight, and greatly extend the battle space of current air and missile defense systems. Stunner’s lethal hit-to-kill effects ensure a wide margin of tactical overmatch against a broad spectrum of current and projected air and missile defense threats.

Raytheon and RAFAEL are conducting integration activities to field a U.S. compliant Stunner interceptor, completely integrated with the Patriot family of systems and other U.S. battle management and command/control solutions. A mixed inventory of the U.S. Stunner variant with other fielded missile solutions offers the warfighter an affordable inventory mix to more effectively deter and defeat an enemy raid attack. The U.S. Stunner is also compatible with allied launchers and battle management systems to support combined forces requirements.
