Russia's
military has given Ukrainian forces in Crimea until dawn on Tuesday, March
4, 2014, 00:50 AM to surrender or face an assault, Ukrainian defence sources
have said. Russia is now said to be in de facto control of the Crimea
region. Ukraine has ordered full mobilisation to counter the intervention. |

Moscow has defended
its parliament's approval of President Vladimir Putin's use of military
force to protect its citizens in the Crimean Peninsula, an autonomous
region of eastern Ukraine with strong loyalty to Russia. Four Russian navy ships in Sevastopol's harbor were blocking Ukraine's anti-submarine warship Ternopil and the command ship Slavutych, waiting for their answers, he said. |

The
main Russian military base in Ukraine is the fleet headquarters and naval
infantry brigade headquarters at Sevastopol. There are four coastal missile
regiments each located in four different bases. The 810 Naval Infantry Brigade is the main combat unit of Russian armed forces based in Sevastopol with a total of 1,088 personnel. This unit is equipped with BTR-80 (8x8 armoured personnel carrier), BTR-82A (8x8 armoured personnel carrier) BMP-2 (Armoured infantry fighting vehicle), BPM-1K (Command post tracked vehicle). 2S1 Gvozdika (122mm self-propelled howitzer), 2S9 Nona (mortar carrier vehicle), 2S23 (mortar carier), SA-8 (Surface-to-Air defense missile system), MT-LB (multirole tracked armoured vehicle), PRP-3 (Reconnaissance armoured vehicle), PRP-4 (Reconnaissance armoured vehicle), BTR-60 PU-12 (mobile command post), 1V19 (Artillery support vehicle), BREM-2 (Tracked armoured recovery vehicle), MT-55A (armoured vehicle-launched bridge) and MTU-20 (tracked bridge layer vehicle). |
