Russian
armed forces plan to take delivery of S-500, a state-of-the-art long-range
air defense system developed by Almaz AnteY, Bondarev said. The producer
is finalizing new missiles for the system, which would have advanced homing
electronics. S-500 is an advanced version of S-400 with dedicated components designed to intercept ballistic missiles at a height of up to 200 km and a maximum range of 600 km. The system is expected to be able to shut down up to 10 incoming ballistic missiles simultaneously. It also has an extended radar range compared to S-400. According Almaz-Antey, the development of Russia's S-500 air defense system will be completed in 2015, and the system could be put in service with the Russian military in 2016. The S-500 is expected to become the backbone of a unified aerospace defense system being formed in Russia. The Russian military has demanded that the system must be capable of intercepting ballistic missiles and hypersonic cruise missiles, and plans to order at least 10 battalions of S-500s for the future Russian Aerospace Defense Forces. |
