The Brazilian Army is set to receive fifty Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) from the US Army later this year. The surplus vehicles will be delivered through a Foreign Military Sales contract, with the Brazilian Army deciding in 2012 to upgrade its M113 fleet.

The delivery includes M577A2 command and control vehicles forming the majority of this batch. Thirty-four of the BAE Systems-produced vehicles will be delivered, along with a dozen M113A2 external link armored personnel carriers and four M88A1 external link recovery vehicles.
The M577 is command post armoured vehicle based on the chassis of the M113 tracked APC. The M577 is essentially an M113 series APC with a higher roof to the rear of the driver's position. The M577A2 is a product improved version of the M577 and is provided with improved cooling, suspension system, personnel heating system and new Diesel engine. The M113A2 is an impoved variant of the M113 tracked armoured vehicle personnel carrier, which in service with U.S. armed forces since 1960. The M88A1 Heavy Equipment Recovery Combat Utility Lift and Evacuation System (HERCULES) is fully-tracked, heavy armored vehicles which can implement safe, reliable, swift, and effective combat evacuations through the battlefield recovery operations of towing, winching, and lifting. |
