The first brigade set of the Buk-M3 medium-range air defense missile system and the Tor-M2 short-range antiaircraft missile complex will arrive for the Russian Army in 2016, Ground Forces Air Defense Commander Lieutenant-General Alexander Leonov said on Friday, December 25, 2015.

"The first brigade set of the Buk-M3 medium-range air defense missile system is planned to arrive for the Russian Army in 2016," Leonov said on the eve of the 100th anniversary of the Army Air Defense Corps.
The Russian Army will also start to receive Tor-M2 air defense missile systems in 2016. The system’s effective range, the number of its surface-to-air missiles and the degree of jamming resistance have been increased by 1.5-2 times compared to its previous-generation versions. Russian air defense large units currently operate S-300V long-range air defense missile systems able to hit aerodynamic targets at a distance of up to 100 kilometers (62.1 miles), Leonov said. S-300V4 long-range air defense missile systems started to arrive for the Russian Army in 2014 to replaceS-300V systems. The S-300V4 system’s characteristics have been improved by 1.5-2.5 times compared to its previous version. The Russian Army continues receiving a modern version of the Buk-M2 system, which maintains the same number of ammunition but can engage 24 aerial targets simultaneously, which is four times more compared to its predecessors and can hit tactical missiles with a launch range of up to 150-200 kilometers (93.2-124.3 miles). "In 2011-2015, modern military hardware has arrived for the Russian Army’s air defense force to equip two air defense missile brigades, which have been set up again. Air defense units of eight all-arms formations have been rearmed with these systems as well," Leonov said. It was reported earlier that Russia had started preparing for the serial production of the new Buk-M3 medium-range air defense missile system. The Buk-M3 system is superior to the S-300 air defense missile system by a number of characteristics, including the kill probability. The Buk-M3 system has a range of 70 kilometers (43.5 miles), which is 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) more compared to previous versions of the Buk antiaircraft missile system. The Buk-M3 has a maximum firing altitude of 35 kilometers (21.7 miles). |

The Tor-M2 is a new-generation short-range air defense missile system of the Tor family. The Tor-M2 system is designed to defend key military and governmental facilities from attacks delivered by aircraft, helicopters, cruise and guided missiles, glide and guided air bombs and unmanned aerial vehicles 24 hours a day and in complex weather and jamming conditions.
The Tor-M2 system can detect more than 40 targets simultaneously, determine their danger level, track and fire four targets simultaneously with four missiles launched one by one. Surface-to-air missiles have been specifically developed to intercept small-size intensively-maneuvering targets efficiently to ensure considerable superiority over their closest foreign-made analogs. |
