Since many years, the Naval Infantry of Peru uses the Spanish-made BMR-600 6x6 armoured vehicle that no longer matches the needs of this unit and is not protected against the new threats of the battlefield.

The Peruvian Naval Infantry includes an amphibious brigade of three battalions and local security units with two transport ships, four tank landing ships, and about forty Portuguese Chaimite armored personnel carriers.

The Peruvian Ministry of Defence has ordered 32 LAV-II 8x8 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) from General Dynamics Land Systems in Canada under a USD67 million contract to replace the old BMR-600 6x6 APCs in service with the Peruvian Marine Infantry Command since 1987.

In May 2015, General Dynamics Land Systems Canada has delivered the two first LAV-II "Cayman" 8x8 armored vehicles of the 32 ordered in mid-2014 by the Peruvian Armed Forces.

The Peruvian Navy has named its LAV-IIs the 'Cayman', in honor of a Special Forces group deployed against Shining Path insurgents in the 1980s.

The LAV II is a fully amphibious 8x8 armoured which will increase the capacity of the Naval Infantry of Peru. The LAV II is fully amphibious with a maximum of 3 minutes preparation, being propelled in the water by two propellers mounted one either side at the rear.

The LAV- II for Peru is fitted with an open-top turret mounted at the front of the hull which can be armed with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun or 40mm automatic grenade launcher.

The LAV-II has a welded hull and turret. It provides protection against 12.7-mm rounds at the front arc. All-round protection is against 7.62-mm rounds and artillery shell splinters.
