The missile regiment of the Kozelsk unit, armed with Yars strategic missile system has been put on combat duty, Lieutenant General Sergey Siver, Vladimir missile formation commander, has reported. The RS-24 Yars mobile ground missile system /NATO reporting name SS-27 mod.2 Sickle-B/ is fitted with RS-24 intercontinental ballistic missile with a multiple warhead developed by the Moscow Institute of Heat Engineering.

"A missile regiment of the Kozelsk formation, armed with Yars, the latest stationary missile system, has been put on combat duty," Siver said.
He noted that the "main feature of this system is the assured overcoming of the air defense and, if necessary, inflicting of irreparable damage to the foe." Russia's Strategic Missile Force has started an active phase of rearming the formation. "We’ve entered the active phase of rearming the Yoshkar-Ola formation," the Vladimir missile association commander said. According to the general, the past year witnessed an improved personnel training and execution of the rearming task, "the Teikovo formation in the first place." "It was the Vladimir army where the rearming began and, as of today, figuratively speaking, we’ve put a full stop to the rearming of this particular formation," he noted. It was previously reported that the Teikovo missile division was the first unit of the Russian Strategic Missile Force fully rearmed with the Topol-M and Yars missile systems. In 2015 retraining began of the Yoshkar-Ola military in using the Yars systems. The first launch of the RS-24 missile was carried out in 2007. Since 2008 the Yars system has been deployed to Russia’s Strategic Missile Force. The RS-24 missile is created using the scientific and technological solutions employed in the RS-12M2 Topol-M missile system. The deployment of RS-24 IBM will enhance the operational capability of the Strategic Missile Force’s striking group in negotiating the anti-missile defense, thus reinforcing the Russian Strategic Nuclear Force’s nuclear deterrence capability. In the future, the Yars systems will make up, together with the in-service RS-12M2 single-block ICM /Topol-M missile system/, the core of the Russian Strategic Force’s strike group. - |
