A military official says the head of U.S. forces in Africa has donated 4x4 armored vehicles to Cameroon to aid the country's fight against Boko Haram.

Col. Jean Jacques Fouda, Cameroon's official in charge of military hardware, said Saturday, October 17, 2015, that the vehicles given during a visit Friday by Gen. David Rodriguez are designed tp protect soldiers gainst mine threats and are some of the best the country had ever acquired. He did not specify how many were donated.
According information from DefenceWeb site, on 25 September 2015, the US Department of Defence said that Mack Defense of Allentown, Pennsylvania, would supply 62 APCs to United States Africa Command partner nations. Mack Defense on 6 October told IHS Jane’s that all the vehicles are Bastion APCs – Acmat is owned by Renault Trucks Defense which along with Mack Defense is part of the Volvo group. The vehicles will be manufactured in France with an estimated completion date of 30 December 2016. Mack Defense said 32 vehicles will be delivered to Somalia in 2016, 17 to the Ugandan contingent of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and another 13 to AMISOM's Somali contingent. Tunisia will receive four, Cameroon 15 and Ethiopia 12 before the end of 2016. All the countries will also receive at least one spares kit. The Bastion APC was unveiled at Eurosatory in 2010, a defense exhibition in Paris (France), by the French Defence Company ACMAT, It's a new generation of light wheeled armoured vehicle personnel carrier. The Bastion APC is a 4x4, high-mobility infantry and reconnaissance armoured vehicle developed based on the rugged chassis of the VLRA TDN-TDE series to provide a capable and reliable multirole platform. The monocoque hull structure of Bastion APC has optimized body angles and a low silhouette for increased survivability. The high hardness armoured steel hull provides all-round protection against infantry rifles and machine guns (ballistic protection Level 1 to Level 3, NATO STANAG 4569) and artillery shell splinters. The vehicle provides protection against anti-personnel and anti-tank mines and side explosives. The Bastion APC Acmat can be fitted with a various types of remote weapon stations and turrets incorporating 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine guns, 40 mm automatic grenade launcher can be adapted to the Bastion APC range of vehicles. |
