As Russian military analysts polled by TASS said, Iran has received one S-300PMU2 regimental set, but its composition is not disclosed. The organic S-300PMU2 system comprises 83M6E2 command post (includes 55K6E command point and 64N6E2 air search radar with S-band phased antenna array) and up to six 98Zh6E surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems (each system includes 30N6E2 radar, up to 12 5P85TE2 / 5P85SE2 launchers (each launcher is armed with four 48N6E/48N6E2 surface-to-air missiles in tubes). The system can be reinforced with additional vehicles, namely, 96L6E all-altitude radar, 76N6 low-altitude surveillance radar and 40V6M mobile antenna platform.

According to Russian military analysts, Iran will deploy S-300PMU2 systems to cover critical objects, including the capitlal (Tehran), top-echelon command posts, atomic energy facilities. The location of the systems` bases has not been disclosed. At the same time, the expected sites of the aforementioned bases are supposed to have been surveyed by Iranian advance parties (which might include Russian specialists) and the primary and alternate positions have been defined. The deployment of the S-300PMU2 systems is supposed to be started, when the related deliveires have been completed.

The analysts pointed out, that S-300PMU2 ADS would significantly increase the combat effectiveness of Iranian air defense network. Nevertheless, it should be noted, that S-300PMU2 is not a 'heal-all remedy', which can solve all problems of Iranian national security.

Two S-300PMU2 regimental sets are not sufficient to break the back of the perspective adversary`s aerial offensive, to defeat the enemy`s Air Force, and to protect all Iranian crucial objects. All services and arms of national Armed Forces, namely, Land Forces, Air Force, Navy, rocket troops and artillery, electronic warfare and intelligence units are to be involved in countering the enemy`s offensive. Iran is at an early stage of national Armed Forces modernisation (as of April 2016) and the procurement of modern weapons (including long-range and offensive systems) is demanded to this end. According to Russian military analysts, two groups of S-300PMU2 ADS, one group of medium-range Buk-M2E (SA-17 Gadfly) SAM system, several batallions of Pantsyr-S1 (SA-22 Greyhound) self-propelled anti-air gun-missile systems (SPAAGM) and appropriate locating equipment integrated in a radar brigade are required for establishing of an effective layered air defense network over the Iran`s capital, Tehran.

S-300PMU2 Favorit air defense system was developed on the base of S-300P () ADS. Favorit has several technical advantages over S-300PMU-1 (). The combat effectiveness of 48N6E/48N6E2 surface-to-air missiles has been significantly increased. S-300PMU2 system can eliminate tow-flying stealth aerial targets (including small aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)). The system`s maximum effective firing range (including receding target engagement) has been increased to 200 km. Favorit ADS can be integrated in all types of air defense networks, including those based on STANAG NATO standards. 96L6E radar has significantly increased the effectiveness of the air defense system`s work in the autonomous mode. Favorit can fire both 48N6E and 48N6E2 surface-to-air missiles. S-300PMU2 can eliminate non-strategic ballistic missiles at distances up to 40 km.
