The broadcast shows new T-90-based TOS-1A system firing MO.101.04 unguided rockets. It is equipped with Kontakt-5 (Contact V) explosive reactive armour (ERA) and side armour plates. The T-90-based TOS-1A system retains the basic launching unit comprised of 24 tubes. The process of TOS-1A reloading by TZM loader-transport vehicle was also broadcasted. The Iraqi TZM vehicle was based on the T-90`s chassis.
Basic TOS-1A self-propelled heavy flamethrower system is mounted on refurbished T-72A tank hull, which is not equipped with either ERA or additional front/side armour plates. TOS-1A, unlikely T-72A, received four 902B Tucha smoke grenade launchers installed on the frontal armour plate. They are intended to provide smokescreen after the rocket salvo. New TOS-1A modification retains all four Tuchas. According to local reports, the same T-90-based TOS-1A system have been supplied to Syrian governmental forces fighting against the Islamic State (IS, forbidden in Russia) terroristic group. The number of the delivered combat vehicles has not been disclosed by the Syrian military authorities. TOS-1A has a range of 400-6000 m and a full salvo time of 6 sec (for 24 unguided rockets). The vehicle has a combat weight of 44,3 t and a crew of three servicemen. Using rockets with thermobaric warheads significantly increases the vehicle`s firepower against enemy`s personnel group targets. Previously, an Omsktransmash (the manufacturer of TOS-1A, a subsidiary of the UralVagonZavod company) source told TASS-DEFENSE, that system`s tube launching unit can be installed on different types of chassis. "We have developed TOS-1A self-proppeled heavy flamethrower system based even on the US absolutely outdated M60 Patton tank. The first TOS-1As used KrAZ heavy truck chassis", the source pointed out. |
