"The armoured vehicle provided by the Russian Federation has been handed over at the international airport of [the Kyrgyz capital city of] Bishkek - Manas," the press office says in a news release. It noted that Kyrgyzstan has received the fully outfitted BTR-70M APCs and computerized simulators for their drivers "within the framework of military technical cooperation".
Officers with the Kyrgyz General Staff, officials from the State Defense Committee and personnel of the armored vehicle repair plant in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg attended the acceptance ceremony. "This is the first eight-APC batch delivered from the Russian Federation to this country," the press office told TASS. "We are expecting the rest of the materiel in the near future." "The military technical aid provided by Russia to Kyrgyzstan has been in line with intergovernmental agreements," the news release says. "To date, Russia has donated armored vehicles, artillery systems with spares, and small arms ammunition to this country." Moscow and Bishkek had agreed that the former would supply the latter with up-to-date combat gear worth $1 billion free of charge. The BTR-70 is a Russian-made 8x8 armoured vehicle personnel carrier which was shown for the first time to the public in November 1980 during a military parade in Moscow. The BTR-70 enters in service with the Russian army in August 1972. The BTR-70 can carried a total of 11 military personnel including driver and commander. The BTR-70 is fitted with a small one-man turret which is the same used on the BTR-60PB. The turret is armed with a 14.5 KPVT and a 7.62 mm PKVT machine gun. The turret is manually controlled and can rotate 360° with gun elevation from 30° to -6°. The BTR-70M is a modernized version of the BTR-70 with diesel engine and rear hull of BTR-80 (might retain original roof line). |
