BAE Systems Land & Armaments LP has been awarded a $53,868,769 firm-fixed-price foreign military sales contract from Brazil for the upgrading and repair of 32 M109A5 self-propelled howitzers, the US Department of Defense released yesterday on its website.

"Work will be performed in multiple locations, with an estimated completion date of March 31, 2019. Fiscal 2010 other funds in the amount of $53,868,769 were obligated at the time of the award. Army Contracting Command, Warren, Michigan, is the contracting activity," the US DoD said.

In june 2014, Brazil requested a $110 million FMS for M109A5+ upgrade kits and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support. "The reconfigured howitzers will provide the Brazilian Army with a much needed upgrade to this capability while further enhancing interoperability with U.S. and other military forces," said then the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency.

While the A5 variant replaces the 155 mm M185 cannon in an M178 mount with a 39-caliber 155 mm M284 cannon in an M182 mount, giving the A5 a maximum range of 22,000 meters with unassisted projectiles and 30,000 meters with Rocket Assisted Projectiles (RAP Rounds), the A5+ kit mainly upgraded the fire control and other critical components.
