Buk-M3 air defense missile system will enter in service Russian Southern Military District in 2016
Advanced Buk-M3 air defense missile systems will arrive for Russia’s Southern Military District in 2016, Russian Army Commander-in-Chief Colonel-General Oleg Salyukov said.

"Air defense units continue to receive advanced surface-to-air missile systems, including, the Buk-M3 system with an increased jamming-resistance capability," Salyukov said.

"One self-propelled unit of this system can fire six aerial targets simultaneously. In 2016, these systems will arrive for a Southern Military District brigade," he added.

According to the commander, a new antiaircraft artillery system with advanced ammunition is being developed in Russia for the Army.

"A mobile antiaircraft artillery system with passive aerial target acquisition and tracking capabilities will be developed soon," Salyukov said.

Maintenance and training equipment, as well as the ammunition, including a multifunction remote-detonation round and a guided projectile, are being developed together with the system. The general did not specify the designation of this work.

The Buk-M3 medium-range surface-to-air missile system is a modernized version of the Russian-made Buk-M2 system, features advanced electronic components and a deadly new missile and could be regarded as a completely new system.

The Buk-M3 is able to destroy any types of air targets from a range of 2.5 to 70 km, with a speed of 3,000 m/s at an altitude from 15 m to 35 km. The Buk-M3 missile has been optimized for the interception of low-flying cruise missiles but can also engage ground and sea targets.
