Cuba has signed a defense cooperation program with Russia until 2020.
|
|||
Russia and Cuba signed a program of technology cooperation in the defense sector until 2020. The document was inked at a meeting of the Russian-Cuban intergovernmental commission in Havana by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin and Vice President of Cuba’s Council of Ministers Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz.

Rogozin said the agreement was intended to help Cuba organize the modernization of its armed forces and envisages no military sales, TASS reported.
Rogozin said this equipment will be refitted and modernized “to ensure total security of Cuba and to respond to modern challenges”. Many military equipment use by the Cuban armed forces were delivered from the Soviet Union. A package of six documents has been signed. Rogozin and Cabrisas Ruiz also inked the final act of the XIV meeting of the intergovernmental commission. Other documents include a protocol of intent between the Russian Federal Agency for Air Transport and Civil Aviation Institute of Cuba, memorandum of understanding between the Scientific Center for the Expertise of Medical Means of the Russian health ministry and the Center for State Control of Medicines, Medical Equipment and Devices of Cuba. Cuba was a historic ally of the Soviet Union until the fall of communism in 1991. Under President Vladimir Putin, relations between the two countries have continued to improve. |
