In June 2016, Russia has announced the delivery of S-300PS air defense missile systems to Kazakhstan free of charge with an aim to strengthen the unified regional air defense system.

Russia continues working on setting up a joint air defence system with all of its ex-Soviet military allies, including Kazakhstan, according military sources.

Moscow has a joint air defence system in place with Belarus and Kazakhstan, and the agreement to create one with Armenia "is being considered for ratification" by the two countries' parliaments, said Nikolai Bordyuzha, the head of the Russia-led alliance of six countries, called CSTO.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization, CSTO, is an intergovernmental military alliance that was signed on 15 May 1992. In 1992, six post-Soviet states belonging to the Commonwealth of Independent States—Russia, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan—signed the Collective Security Treaty.

The S-300PS (first generation) with NATO denomination SA-10B (Grumble B), is a more mobile alternative of the basic version of surface-to-air missile system S-300 PT, the principal difference resides, in the use of the chassis of a truck 8x8 MAZ-7910, on which the four launcher missile containers are mounted, contrary to S-300 PT which uses a tractor drawn trailer.

The S-300 PS is also capable of destroying ballistic missile targets, and is regarded as one of the most potent anti-aircraft missile systems currently fielded Its radars have the ability to simultaneously track up to 100 targets while engaging up to 12. It has a maximum range of 75 km.
