Mongolia received eight T-72A MBT and ten BTR-70M 8x8 APC from Russia as military aid in 2015. | |||
Mongolia received Russian second-hand T-72A main battle tanks and BTR-70M 8x8 armoured personnel carrier as military aid in 2015, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute`s (SIPRI) arms transfer database. This transfer of combat equipment to Mongolia is provided in the framework of military and technical assistance of the Russian Federation.

The vehicles are supposed to have been requested in 2014. In 2015, Mongolia received eight T-72A main battle tanks (MBT) and ten BTR-70M armoured personnel carriers (APC). The equipment had been upgraded before the delivery.
The T-72 is a russian made main battle tank that entered production in 1970. The T-72A was accepted for service in June 1979 and is a further development of the T-72. The main armament of the T-72A consists of one 125 mm (2A46) smoothbore gun. The T-72A is fitted with an automatic carousel loader is mounted on the turret floor and also on the rear wall of the turret. The T-72A also had a significant increase in armour protection, especially over the frontal arc of the turret. The BTR-70 is a Russian-made 8x8 armoured vehicle personnel carrier which was shown for the first time to the public in November 1980 during a military parade in Moscow. The BTR-70M is a modernized version of BTR-70 with turret, diesel engine and rear hull section of the BTR-80 According to the Stockholm Institute, the combined Russian arms supplies to Mongolia in 1991-2015 were valued at USD107 million. Mongolia received two Mi-171E (NATO reporting name: Hip) medium military-transport helicopters, 75 V-600 (SA-3B Goa) surface-to-air missiles, 50 BTR-70M and 20 BTR-80 APCs, 58 T-72A MBTs and two units of S-125M 'Pechora-2M' (SA-3B Goa) air defense systems within the prescribed period. |
