National Guard of Ukraine conducts trial tests of Ukrainian Varta-2 4x4 armoured personnel carrier.
National Guard of Ukraine tests the new Ukrainian-made 4x4 armoured vehicle named "Varta-2". Following the first results of the trial tests, the Ukrainian National Guard could take the decision to purchase 10 vehicles that may be followed by a second order of 60 vehicles.

The first Varta-2 armoured vehicles was delivered to the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal affairs at the end of 2015 to be tested by the National Guard of Ukraine.
 
 

The Varta-2 is fitted with a powerful engine developing 270 hp. In the future, the vehicle could be motorized with a modern Cummins engine. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 120 km/h and a maximum cruising range of 800 km.

The Varta-2 uses a V-shaped hull technology and heavy armor encapsulating the crew and passenger compartments to offer protection for the crew against blast of improvised explosive devices. It withstands blasts equivalent to 6 kg of TNT, as well as in case of damage, only the bottom part of the vehicle must be replace and not the crew compartment. The armour of the hull provides 360° protection against 7.62mm caliber piercing bullets.

The layout of the Varta-2 is standard for a wheeled APC (Armoured Personnel Carrier), with the engine at the front, the crew cabin in the middle and the troops compartment at the . There is two doors on each side of the vehicle with bulletproof windows and firing port.

There is also three bulletproof windows and firing port on each side of the hull. There is a large pneumatically assisted rear entry door of fabricated steel armour plate that has also a bulletproof windows and firing port.
 
 

The front of the Varta-2 is fitted with a self-recovery winch with a capacity of 10 tonnes. it has also a central tire inflation system to prevent flat tires during combat operations and enables drivers to adjust the tire pressure while driving to match the relevant ground conditions.

The roof of the vehicle can be fitted with a weapon station of a maximum weight of 500 kg. With this feature, the Varta-2 is able to be equipped with a full range of weapon station armed with light or heavy machine gun up to 14.5mm caliber. A BTR-70/80 turret armed with 14.5 mm KPV heavy machine gun and 7.62 mm PKVT coaxial machine gun can be installed on the Varta-2 offering high level of fire power.

There is a large internal volume and the vehicle can carry a total of 10 military personnel. Blast mitigation seats are available for each member of the crew offering protection from injuries caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
