New Wireless Blast Gaunge System unveiled by BlackBox Biometrics
BlackBox Biometrics, Inc., the leader in sensor technology that measures the unseen impact of concussive forces, is proud to announce the release of their newest innovation, the Wireless Blast Gauge System. A significant advancement to the already robust Blast Gauge System platform, the new technology will debut at Eurosatory 2016 Booth #C487 in Paris, France.

The new system features optional wireless connectivity for instant data download to an iOS or Android tablet and a longer battery life designed to last a full deployment even in the world’s harshest environments.

The Blast Gauge System is a surveillance tool that captures exposure to blast overpressure and acceleration forces, documenting long-term trends of blast exposure and minimizing risk of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The system is comprised of a 3-sensor set worn on the head, shoulder, and chest with accompanying PC software and mobile application for data retrieval. Instant exposure triage data can be accessed wirelessly via the mobile application, or with a button press on the gauge, emitting a discreet visual cue with green, yellow, or red status LEDs. A micro-USB connection and optional wireless connectivity allows full time-based data to be accessed by medical personnel for detailed post-event analysis.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) from an explosive blast remains a significant problem for military and law enforcement personnel exposed to harmful levels of blast shockwaves, especially those involved in operations and training. A blast shockwave can cause a series of complex mechanical and physical reactions in the brain. Mild to moderate TBI may be difficult to detect immediately post event, with cognitive or motor deficits manifesting weeks or months later.

Additionally, scientific studies have linked repetitive overpressure exposure to structural changes in the brain, increased risk of PTSD, acceleration of age-associated neurological disorders, and concussion symptoms, highlighting the need for individualized blast surveillance similar to radiation badge programs.

Because it is not practical to provide protection from the occupational hazard of blast shockwaves, monitoring and documenting exposure to identify individuals at risk for traumatic brain injury is paramount. Since its introduction in 2011, the Blast Gauge System has pioneered blast measurement enabling advanced research into the mechanisms of blast-related brain injuries and safe exposure levels. The technology is currently used by all branches of the United States Military, as well as over 10 different international militaries throughout the world. The new, Wireless Blast Gauge System will be available for purchase in August 2016.
