Warsaw announced in April 2015 it was planning to buy the Raytheon-made Patriot system, a deal valued at an estimated €5 billion ($5.3 billion), as well as 50 Caracal choppers — a contract worth another three billion euros,
In November 2015, Poland's new conservative government called into question the previous liberal cabinet's choice of US-made Patriot missiles and Airbus helicopters for a multi-billion-euro military upgrade. The American Company Raytheon manufacturer of the Patriot system was ready to build the system in 65 months, but the actual delivery date would depend on inter-governmental negotiations, the company said at the time. "The real, long range aim of our plans is a sustainable ownership of an efficient air defense. We hope this could be the Patriot system", Macierewicz said at a joint press conference with U.S. ambassador Paul W. Jones transmitted by private broadcast TVN24. Macierewicz said talks are underway concerning the U.S. Patriot missile system. He spoke following a Polish-U.S. missile defense exercise at a test range in Skwierzyna in western Poland. in April 2015, Poland has announced the selcetion of Patriot as new air defense system for the Polish Armed Forces. A spokesman at the Polish Embassy in Washington confirmed that the nation has chosen the Patriot over the Aster 30, a system offered by a European consortium of MBDA and the Thales Group. Poland has systematically and over the last decades modernized its armed forces. The decision to purchase an anti-air and anti-missile defense system is the result of a need to replace Poland's obsolete military equipment as well as to reinforce high interoperability within NATO and deepen cooperation among allies. The MIM-104 Patriot is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, the primary of its kind used by the United States Army and several allied nations. Patriot uses an advanced aerial interceptor missile and high performance radar systems. Patriot systems have been sold to Taiwan, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Spain. Poland hosts a battery of Patriot launchers in Morag since 24 May 2010. It is manufactured by the U.S. defense contractor Raytheon. |
