In July 2016, it was announced that the Polish government intends to finalize an agreement with the US government by the end of the year to buy the Raytheon-made Patriot air defense missile system, according the Polish defense minister.

Poland could purchase eight Patriot air defense missile systems. The American Company Raytheon, manufacturer of the Patriot, had agreed to perform at least half the value of the work in Poland, the Polish defense minister, Antoni Macierewicz, said in July 2016.

The missile defense tender is central to Warsaw’s large-scale military modernization program , sped up in response to the Ukraine crisis and Russia’s renewed assertiveness in the region.

The first two Patriot batteries will be delivered by 2019. Six more have been ordered and could be delivered after 2020.

The MIM-104 Patriot is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, the primary of its kind used by the United States Army and several allied nations. Patriot uses an advanced aerial interceptor missile and high performance radar systems.

The range of the missile is 70 km and maximum altitude is greater than 24 km. The minimum flight time is the time to arm the missile, which is less than nine seconds, and the maximum flight time is less than three and a half minutes.

The latest generation of Patriot missile, the PAC-3 Missile is the world's most advanced, capable and powerful theater air defense missile. It defeats the entire Patriot Air Defense System threat spectrum: tactical ballistic missiles, evolving cruise missiles and fixed and rotary winged aircraft. PAC-3 Missiles significantly increase the Patriot system's firepower, since 16 PAC-3s load out on a Patriot launcher, compared with four legacy Patriot PAC-2 missiles.
