The Russian Defense Ministry will focus on developing military infrastructure in the Arctic and on the Kuril Islands in 2016-2020, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Friday. This year, Russia will deploy coastal defense missile systems and new-generation unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) on the Kuril Islands, Russian Defense Minister also said.

"The scheduled rearmament of units on the Kuril Islands is being held. This year, Russia will deploy Bal and Bastion coastal defense missile systems, as well as new-generation Eleron-3 unmanned aerial vehicles there," Shoigu said at a meeting of the Defense Ministry’s board. Last year, air defense units armed with Tor-M2U (NATO reporting name: NATO reporting name: SA-15 Gauntlet) surface-to-air missile systems went on combat duty on the Kuril Islands. As Shoigu said, more than 9,500 tons of construction materials and equipment were brought to Wrangel Island and Cape Shmidt in 2015. The defense minister also said that the Eastern Military District’s daily control center would be equipped with "state-of-the-art technology." "This will allow collecting, generalizing and analyzing information quickly, as well as coordinating the work of military bodies and the actions of joint and inter-departmental task forces," he added. |
