"There are plans to develop a promising new-generation self-propelled anti-tank system that will be a fire-and-forget weapon," Matveyevsky said.
Fire-and-forget is a type of missile guidance which does not require further guidance after launch such as illumination of the target or wire guidance, and can hit its target without the launcher being in line-of-sight of the target. This is an important property for a guided weapon to have, since a person or vehicle that lingers near the target to guide the missile (using, for instance, a laser designator) is vulnerable to attack and unable to carry out other tasks. Work is currently being carried out "to increase the combat potential of the system and the jamming resistance of its missiles, automatize anti-tank unit command and control and enhance the warhead lethality," he added. The Russian Armed Forces operate the Khrizantema-S and Shturm-SM anti-tank missile systems designed to hit the enemy’s armored vehicles, including tanks. The Khrizantema-S is a Russian anti-tank missile designed to deal with current and future generations of main battle tanks and can also be used to engage slow and low flying aerial targets like helicopters. The missile carries the GRAU designation 9M123 and the NATO reporting name AT-15 Springer. The 9M123 missile together with its associated guidance system forms the 9K123 missile system. The 9K114 Shturm is a radio guided anti-tank missile system of the Soviet Union. Its GRAU designation is 9K114. Its NATO reporting name is AT-6 Spiral. The missile itself is known as the 9M114 Kokon (Cocoon) |
