"A governmental resolution to put the BMD-4M Sadovnitsa airborne fighting vehicle and the BTR-MDM Rakushka armored personnel carrier into operation was signed in April," Shamanov said.
"We will receive 144 BMD-4M airborne fighting vehicles and 60 BTR-MDM armored personnel carriers this year," he added. When asked about how many vehicles the Russian Airborne Force would receive in the next few years, Shamanov did not specify the exact number. He said that "the number of these armored vehicles will be considerably bigger." The BMD-4M Sadovnitsa tracked airborne fighting vehicle is an upgraded version of the BMD-4 vehicle. It features a new hull, engine, running gear and other units. The BMD-4M airborne fighting vehicle is fitted with the Bakhcha-U combat module armed withy 100mm and 30mm cannons and an automatic gun. The BTR-MDM Rakushka armored personnel carrier designed for airdropping has been developed on the basis of the BMD-4 airborne fighting vehicle to replace the BTR-D armored personnel carrier, which was made operational in the 1970s. First Vice-President and co-owner of Russia’s Tractor Plants Enterprise Albert Bakov told TASS earlier that the enterprise was ready to produce up to 200 BMD-4 airborne fighting vehicles and BTR-MDM armored personnel carriers annually from 2016. It was reported earlier that the Russian Defense Ministry was expected to receive up to 250 BMD-4 airborne fighting vehicles and BTR-MDM armored personnel carriers over three years under the contract. |
