As the deputy commander-in-chief said, R&D works on the S-500 air defense missile system are nearing completion. Also, the S-350 air defense missile system is currently undergoing trials.

"The S-350 Vityaz air defense missile system is currently undergoing type tests. The first launches have been performed successfully and the system has confirmed its inherent characteristics," Gumyonny said.

"The S-350 air defense missile system will be serial-produced and will replace S-300PS [NATO reporting name: SA-10 Grumble] systems," he added.

As Aerospace Force Commander-in-Chief Viktor Bondarev said earlier, the Russian Armed Forces may start receiving S-500 air defense missile systems in 2016.

According to Bondarev, systems of this type will be able to hit targets at an altitude of 200 kilometers (124 miles).

The first regiment of S-500 air defense missile systems is expected to provide air defense for Moscow and central Russia.
