Russian Armed Forces have deployed 72 9K720 Iskander-M (NATO reporting name: SS-26 Stone) tactical surface-to-surface mobile missile systems, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies` (IISS) report.

In total, the Armed Forces have 120 tactical missile systems, including 72 Iskander-M and 48 9K79-1 Tochka-U (SS-21B Scarab) systems (as of March 2016). Hence, Iskander is the most popular land-based mobile surface-to-surface missile system in service with Russian military. Previously, several obsolete Soviet 8K14 R-17 Elbrus (SS-1c Scud B) missile launchers were placed in store.
9K720 Iskander-M missile system is intended for elimination of both point and area targets. It was designed by Russian KBM company (a subsidiary of the High-Precision Weapons holding). The system includes several mobile launching units, command & control post, trasport-loading vehicles. In basic configuration Iskander incorporates 9M723 single-stage solid-propellant missile with a firing range of up to 500 km (310 miles). 9M723 missile can be armed with either high-explosive (HE) or cluster warhead. |
