Russian army to activate two more artillery battalions in Southern Military District. | |||
Two self-propelled heavy field artillery battalions will have been activated before year-end in an artillery large unit of the Southern Military District, the district’s press office has told journalists. Plans provide for one of the battalions to be equipped with 240-mm 2S4 Tyulpan self-propelled mortars and the other with 203-mm 2S7M Malka self-propelled guns.

"The command and control of the artillery units will be exercised, inter alia, with the use of 1V12M upgraded command vehicles outfitted with the GLONASS global positioning system-based electronic survey instruments in addition to the regular optical survey devices,’ the press office said.
The 240-mm Tyulpan mortar is designed to destroy hardened field fortifications, buildings used by the enemy as shelters, command posts, artillery, rocket and missile batteries and other combat systems invulnerable to direct fire. The 2S7M Malka is a modernized version of the 2S7 Pion which was introduced in the Russian army in 1983. The 2S7M is fitted with a new fire control system and an increase of onboard ammaunution from four to eight. The 2S7M Malka main armament consists of 2A44 203mm cannon. It has a maximum firing range of 25 km. The 2S4 Tyulpan is Russian-made 240mm calibre self-propelled mortar carrier. This mortar system reached full operational capability with the former Soviet Army in 1975. The 2S4 Tyulpan is fitted with a 240 mm mortar.It has a maximum firing range of 18 km. |
