About 600 items of modern military hardware will arrive for Russia’s Eastern Military District in 2016, District Commander Colonel-General Sergei Surovikin said on Monday. In particular, the Eastern Military District will receive Sukhoi Su-35 (NATO reporting name: Flanker-E) multipurpose fighter jets, advanced Kamov Ka-52 (Hokum-B) helicopters, surface ships and missile systems, he added.

"We are virtually maintaining the pace of the rearmament assumed in 2015," Surovikin added. According to the commander, the Eastern Military District is expected to receive Su-35 and Su-30SM (Flanker-C) fighter jets, Su-34 (Fullback) frontline bombers, Ka-52, Ka-27 (Helix-A), Mil Mi-8AMTSh (Hip) helicopters and surface ships.
The Eastern Military District will also receive Iskander (SS-26 Stone) tactical ballistic missile systems, Bastion (SSC-5) coastal defense missile systems, S-400 Triumf (SA-21 Growler), Pantsyr-S (SA-22 Greyhound), Tor-M2U (SA-15 Gauntlet) and Verba air defense missile systems and Tornado-G multiple rocket launch systems. Orlan and Eleron unmanned aerial vehicles and other military hardware will arrive for the Eastern Military District as well. According to Surovikin, modern Su-35S fighter jets went on combat duty for the first time in December 2015. As Surovikin said, this event is "important not only for the Eastern Military District but also for Russia’s Aerospace Force." The Eastern Military District received more than 850 items of military hardware in 2015, including the Project 955 nuclear-powered submarine Alexander Nevsky with ballistic missiles, a brigade set of Iskander tactical ballistic missile systems, S-400 and Verba air defense missile systems, Tornado-G multiple rocket launch systems, communications and electronic warfare systems and unmanned aerial vehicles. "By the end of 2015, the proportion of modern military hardware and equipment reached 31% in the Eastern Military District. We are speaking about modern rather than upgraded military hardware," the commander said. |
