An upgraded S-300PM (NATO reporting name: SA-10 Grumble) air defense missile system has gone on combat duty in the Irkutsk Region in East Siberia, the Russian Central Military District’s press office said on Wednesday.

"The unit received S-300PM air defense missile systems in December 2015. Servicemen learnt to operate them in the Leningrad Region [in northwest Russia]," the press office said.
Earlier, servicemen in the Irkutsk Region operated S-300PS air defense missile systems. "Despite their similar appearance, the S-300PM air defense missile system differs from its predecessors considerably," the press office said. The S-300 PM was the upgraded standard production version and accepted for operational service around 1990, designated by the Russian S-300 PM (M for modified). The S-300PS/S-300PM (NATO reporting name SA-10d/e) was introduced in 1985 and is the only version thought to have been fitted with a nuclear warhead. "Missiles of the upgraded air defense missile system have improved equipment and can hit aerial targets flying at a speed of up to 6,450 km/h," the press office said. "The missile can hit the enemy’s aircraft at a distance of 150 kilometers [93 miles] and ballistic missiles at a range of up to 40 kilometers [25 miles]," the press office added. On March 1, S-400 Triumf (SA-21 Growler) air defense missile systems assumed combat duty in the Novosibirsk Region in West Siberia to replace S-300PT systems. |
