Russian Military base in Armenia received new RKhM-6 NBC reconnaissance vehicles
Four modern RKhM-6 chemical reconnaissance vehicles have arrived for the NBC protection unit of Russia’s military base in Armenia, a Russian Southern Military District spokesman told TASS on Wednesday. Measures are currently being taken to make the new military hardware operational and train military personnel to operate it, the spokesman added.

According to the spokesman, the RKhM-6 chemical reconnaissance vehicle has been developed on the basis of the BTR-80 armored personnel carrier and is furnished with special equipment to monitor the situation and search for threats.

"Its equipment allows monitoring the situation and searching for radiation, chemical and biological threats," the spokesman said.

The RKhM-6 chemical reconnaissance vehicle "can also monitor weather conditions automatically and transmit data to the operator. The vehicle can also transmit data on weather conditions and threats to the command and control post in the field," he added.

"RKhM-6 chemical reconnaissance vehicles can be used to conduct chemical and radiation reconnaissance, carry out emergency and man-made disaster relief operations and counter the enemy’s precision weapon guidance systems," the Southern Military District’s spokesman said.

The Russian military base is stationed in Armenia in accordance with the inter-state agreement signed between Moscow and Yerevan in 1995. Amendments were introduced to the document in 2010 to extend the base’s period of stay from 25 to 49 years.

Armenia believes that Russia’s military presence is a key component of the country’s national security.
"Close cooperation with Russia is a key component of our security, economic development and stability," Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said on March 18, 2015.

The RKhM-6 chemical reconnaissance vehicle is designed to carry out chemical, radiation and biological reconnaissance and transmit reconnaissance data to the troops control system.

The vehicle has been developed on the basis of the BTR-80 armored personnel carrier’s baseline chassis. The RKhM-6 chemical reconnaissance vehicle has a road speed of 80 km/h (49.7 mph) and a water speed of 9 km/h (5.6 mph). It has fuel endurance of 600 kilometers (372.8 miles). The vehicle’s crew totals three.
