The People`s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) may acquire 28 Russian T-90MS main battle tanks (MBT), according to Chinese Sina web-site. "Vietnam is considering the possibility of 28 T-90MS tanks acquisition. The tanks are planned to be stationed in the northern part of the country. Vietnam has a requirement for about 200 modern MBTs," the authors of Sina said.

Vietnam has not increased the combat capabilities of the national Land Forces since the late 1980s, giving the priority to the rearmament of the PAVN`s Navy and Air Force. In the early 2000s. Hanoi revealed its intention to acquire about 150 T-72M1 from an East European country. The efforts were unrewarded by success. T-72M1 could hardly be described as a modern main battle tank. The vehicle lacks protection and firepower.

T-90MS (M stands for upgraded, Modernizirovanny) main battle tank is the latest development of the world-known T-90S. T-90MS has a combat weight of 48 t, a crew of 3 tankers, a power-to-weight ratio of 24 h.p./t and a maximum road speed of 60 km/h. The tank has received 125mm 2A46M-5 gun as the main weapon with the ammunition load of 40 rounds.

T-90MS is also armed with coaxial 7.62mm Kalashnikov PKTM machinegun integrated in remote controlled weapon station (RCWS). V-92SF (1130 h.p.) diesel multifuel engine powers the MBT. T-90MS features Relikt explosive reactive armour (ERA) developed by NII Stali scientific-research institute (a subsidiary of the Tractor Plants concern).

According to the International Institute for Strategic Studies` (IISS) Military Balance 2016 report, Vietnam has deployed 1,200 main battle tanks (including 70 T-62, 350 Type 59 and 850 T-54/T-55 tanks). About 45 obsolete T-34-85 medium tanks have been placed in store.
