Troops of the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, a unit of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team of U.S. Army , will serve as advisers to the Afghan national security forces, Army officials said Friday.
The Fort Drum soldiers will deploy later this winter after completing a mission rehearsal exercise this month at the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, La., the Army said. The 10th Mountain Division soldiers at Fort Drum are one of the most frequently deployed units in the Armed Services, and continue to serve advisory and training roles in Afghanistan and Iraq. The 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, will deploy 1,300 soldiers from its 2nd Brigade Combat Team to Iraq this spring in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, according to an Army press release. The "Strike" brigade will advise and assist Iraqi Security Forces, replacing the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, which will return to Fort Drum, New York. The brigade from the 101st Airborne will join its division headquarters, which is expected to deploy soon to Iraq and Kuwait to serve as the Combined Joint Forces Land Component Command-Iraq under the division’s commander, Maj. Gen. Gary J. Volesky. The headquarters’ deployment was announced in November. The 2nd Brigade Combat Team recently completed a training rotation at the Army’s Joint Readiness Training Center in Fort Polk, Louisiana in preparation for the about nine-month deployment.
There are about 3,500 U.S. troops deployed to Iraq, serving primarily as advisers to Iraqi forces. |
