U.S. law enforcement agencies have purchased Osa pistols developed by Russia’s Applied Chemistry Research Institute, the press office of Tekhmash Group told TASS. The OSA pistol is Russian-made non-lethal weapon that can be used as flare gun, flashbang gun or starting pistol.

The Applied Chemistry Research Institute is a subsidiary of Tekhmash Group within Russia’s state hi-tech corporation Rostec.
According to the press office, the first batch comprises more than 60 pistols and 10,000 rounds, which are currently undergoing operational evaluation. "Sheriffs from Arizona have purchased a batch of Osa multipurpose pistols. This is the first time when US law enforcement agencies have purchased Russian-made nonlethal weapons designed for neutralization rather than elimination," the press office said. "The so-called humane pistol produces a deterrent and psychological effect, in the first place," the press office added. According to the press office, US police officers have praised the Osa pistol following its preliminary trials. "Sheriffs from other states are currently in talks with Russia to purchase pistols of this type," the press office quoted Tekhmash Group CEO Sergei Rusakov as saying. The Osa PB-4 is a four-barreled break-action gun. It has two horizontal "8"-shaped chambers in its aluminum chamber block, each housing two rounds. There is no need for a separate chamber for each round, because the gas pressure is contained by the cartridges' thick cylindrical case (the external case diameter is 18mm, while the bullet caliber is 15.3mm). |
