According Rudaw website, the US army in Iraq has provided two Peshmerga brigades with 54 armored Humvee vehicles as part of an aid package to help Kurdish forces against ISIS militants in the country. The US is expected to provide Kurdish forces with a $415 million aid package to help it cope with the severe economic crisis gripping the Kurdistan Region. The central government in Baghdad has to date refused to allocate a budget for the Peshmerga Ministry as part of Iraqi defense forces.
The High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), commonly known as the Humvee, is a four-wheel drive military light truck produced by the American Company AM General. The HMMWV is a 4x4 light tactical which was designed primarily for personnel and light cargo transport behind front lines. The Humvee seats 4 with an available fully enclosed metal cabin with a vertical windshield. The body is constructed from lightweight and rust-resistant aluminum, instead of conventional steel. It has all-wheel drive with an independent suspension and helical gear-reduction hubs similar to portal axles which attach towards the top rather than center of each wheel to allow the drivetrain shafts to be raised for a full 16 in (410 mm) of ground clearance. The latest variant of the Humvee series is the M1151A1 and later up-armored A1-versions. It has a stronger suspension and larger 6.5 liter turbo-diesel engine to accommodate the weight of up to 680 kg (1,500 lb) of additional armor. The armor protection can be installed or taken off depending on the operating environment, so the vehicles can move more efficiently without armor when there is no threat of attack. The armour can protect the crew against firing of small arms caliber and shell splinters. |
