Turkish Company Aselsan presents its counter mortar radar system SERHAT mounted on the roof of Cobra 4x4 armoured vehicle at IDEF 2017, the defense exhibition in Istanbul Turkey. A counter-battery radar is a radar system that detects artillery projectiles fired by one or more guns, howitzers, mortars or rocket launchers and, from their trajectories, locates the position on the ground of the weapon that fired it.

The ASELSAN’s Counter Mortar Radar has been designed by ASELSAN for the purpose of detecting and tracking mortar shells to determine the point of origin and the point of impact. The radar covers 360° in azimuth.
Thanks to its modular design the SERHAT Counter Mortar Radar can also be used on a tripod, placed on a building or on a vehicle with an extendable mast. The Serhat radar is able to calculate the approximate fire and impact points of mortar shells by detecting and tracking those in the line of sight with an azimuth of 360 degree coverage. The radar antenna has a diameter of 80 cm mounted on a mast of 1 meter height which has a total weight of 250 kg. In an attempt to provide 360° coverage, circular array active antenna structure with electronic scanning is preferred. With this type of antenna, the radar has the capacity to detect more than one simultaneous fires at a maximum range of 10 km. Since 2016, Turkish armed forces have deployed the counter-mortar "Serhat" radar system at the Öncüpinar border crossing in Kilis, as part of plans by the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) to upgrade border security. Mounted on the Cobra 4x4 armoured vehicle, the Serhat radar offers a fast deployment solution that can quickly move according to the threat while providing protection of the operators against ballistic threats and shell splinters. |
