During the 'Damavand' drills conducted in the presence of different Iranian military units and government officials, including Army Commander Major General Ataollah Salehi, also a mocked enemy drone was targeted and destroyed by the S-300 defense shield. The second spotting and interception was done without prior notice.

The Iranian military forces tested the Russian S-300 air defense system that has been recently delivered to Iran on Saturday, March 4, 2017.

The S-300 defense system was tested to assess its performance, using multiple flying targets and missiles.

Another goal pursued by the drills was assessing the S-300 system's capability in confronting targets which enjoy a low radar cross section and ballistic threats, as well as the Air Defense forces' ability to use the defense shield.

During the wargames, different stages of detecting, tracing, tracking and intercepting enemy threats by the S-300 were assessed in an electronic warfare scenario and the targets were all destroyed by the missile system.

In July 2016, Iran has received a first batch of S-300PMU2 that is able to engage both short-range ballistic missiles as well as medium-range tactical ballistic missiles at a maximum range of 200 km.

The S-300PMU2 Favorit can engage targets flying from 10 m to 27 km above the surface at a speed of up to 10,000 km/h. It is claimed that it has a kill ratio ranging from 0.8 to 0.93 against aircraft and from 0.8 to 0.98 against Tomahawk-class cruise missiles. The S-300PMU2 can engage up to 6 targets simultaneously while providing guidance for up to 12 missiles - two missiles per target ensuring target kill. The S-300PMU2 Favorit can use the launcher unit 5P85TE and 5P85SE.
