New PMP-M mobile pontoon bridge enters in service with Russian army Eastern Military District.
The PMP-M advanced floating bridge will be fielded to the combat engineer unit stationed in Russia’s Primorsky Territory, according to the Eastern Military District’s press office. The PMP-M is a modernized version of the PMP mobile pontoon bridge designed by the Soviet Union during World War II.

"The upgraded system differs from its predecessor in having the straight deck of the ramps, a Savelyev hydrodynamic board set and a ferry lifting gear allowing the pontoon train to be used for crossing rivers with the fast stream. In addition, it includes devices for use during freeze-up and auxiliary equipment as well," the press release says.

The PMP-M can be operated with the stream’s speed standing at 3 m/s and sea state 2. The pontoon train is fit for launching a 60-ton float bridge in 30 min. for heavy vehicles, with its floor being 6.5 m wide and 227 m long. If a ferry is necessary, the PMP-M crew can assemble 16 40-ton ferries (one ferry per 7 min.) or four 170-ton ones measuring around 60 m. The PMP-M also includes towboats used for linking and separating pontoon bridges, hauling ferries, surveying wet gaps, operating crossing sites and running errands as needed.

Structures like the PMP-M both boost maneuverability and mobility of the troops and can be used on natural and man-made disaster relief operations, including large-scale floods.
