"From 2016 the forces will receive modernized combat assault vehicles of the fourth generation BMD-4M and multipurpose BTR-MDM Rakushka APCs (armored personnel carrier). We plan to get over 300 vehicles," he told a handover ceremony of a set of the latest BMD-4M vehicles and Rakushka APC to the 31st separate airborne division.

"For air support units over 25 thousand modern parachutes and air-droppable means (armaments, special and military hardware) and cargoes will be purchased," the commander said.

The BTR-MDM Rakushka airdroppable APC is a BMD-4M derivative designed to replace the BTR-D APC that entered service as far back as the 1970s. The BTR-MDM has a combat weight of 13.2 tons, a carrying capacity of 2 tons, a pair of 7.62-mm PKTM machine guns, a crew of two and a paratrooper squad of 13. Its maximum road speed equals 71 km/h and 10 km/h afloat and the road range is 500 km.

The BMD-4M Sadovnitsa is a heavily upgraded variant of the BMD-4 airborne IFV. It has a new hull, running gear and other units. The AIFV mounts the Bakhcha-U turreted fighting module comprising a 100-mm main armament, a 30-mm coaxial automatic gun and a machine gun.
