"The Strategic Missile Force received 14 vehicles of the type in 2016, with 12 more to follow in 2017. The Taifun-M anticommando vehicle is designed for radio, optical and infrared surveillance and reconnaissance in position areas and for combatting enemy commandos. The Taifun-M is unique owing to its surveillance and reconnaissance equipment, including its unmanned aerial vehicle [UAV], enabling it to spot the enemy 5 km out," the press office says in a news release.

Along with the anticommando vehicles, the branch has been receiving unique simulators designed for training the security and recon troops to find enemy special operators in areas inaccessible to electro-optical sensors and radars.

Owing to its multifunction capability, the simulator is fit for training the whole Taifun-M crew - from the driver to the gunner operating the remotely controlled module.

"The advanced simulator models the tactical situation in the area where enemy commando teams operate, all static and moving objects, including enemy wheeled vehicles and troops. The tactical situation simulator allows controlling the effects of blasts, gunshots and tracers," the press release says.

The simulator allows real-time supervision of the trainees by spotting the errors of each crew member in automatic mode. The TV surveillance system enables the instructor to watch the performance of each of the crewmen.

In the training facility simulating a Yars ICBM launch site, the troops learn to set up surveillance/warning devices designed to detect enemy commandos in any weather irrespective of the time of day and night.

The Strategic Missile Force took delivery of 10 Taifun-M anticommando vehicle simulators in 2016. It will have received 20 more by 2020.
