"The case has been completed to a major extent. Some small issues remain but the major guidelines (of the agreement) have been clarified," he said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on July 25 that Moscow and Ankara had inked agreements to supply the S-400 air defense systems to Turkey. "We have made steps on this issue with the Russian Federation. Signatures have been put and I hope that we’ll see S-400 missiles in our country. We’ll also request the joint production of the systems," the Haber 7 TV channel quoted Erdogan as saying. According to the president, "Turkey has been unable for years to get what it wanted from the United States" with regard to the purchase of air defense missile systems and "has been compelled to shop around." "And this (S-400 agreement) is the result of such a search. Greece, which is a NATO member, has been using the S-300 systems for many years," the Turkish leader said. Russian Presidential Aide for Military and Technical Cooperation Vladimir Kozhin earlier said the contract to supply S-400 to Turkey had been agreed. The S-400 Triumph SA-21 is a long range surface-to-air missile systems produced by Almaz-Antey. The S-400 Trumph is intended to engage, ECM, radar-picket, director area, reconnaissance, strategic and tactical aircraft, tactical and theatre ballistic missiles, medium-range ballistic missiles and other current and future air attack assets at a maximum range of 400 km, and a altitude of up to 30 km. The system entered service with the Russian armed forces in April 2007 and the first S-400 was deployed in combat in August 2007. |
