According to news published on the Army Time website on January 3, 2020, the United States has deployed soldiers from 75th Ranger Regiment in the Middle East to reinforce the presence of U.S. troops in the region. The U.S. Rangers are part of a highly trained and rapidly deployable light infantry force with specialized skills that enable it to engage a variety of conventional and Special Operations targets. The U.S. government continues to deploy more troops in the region after the attack of the U.S. embassy in Iraq and a U.S. airstrike killed Iranian Force commander Qassem Soleimani.
There is no information where the U.S. Rangers will be deployed in the region, but on January 4, 2020, it was announced that approximately 3,500 more troops from Fort Bragg's 82nd Airborne Division will deploy to the Middle East. The U.S. official indicated the troops would likely join the 750 soldiers from the 82nd who already arrived in Kuwait.
The Rangers' primary mission is to engage the enemy in close combat and direct-fire battles. This mission includes direct action operations, raids, personnel and special equipment recovery, in addition to conventional or special light-infantry operations.
Known as the 75th Ranger Regiment, today's Rangers are the premier light-infantry of the U.S. Army and serve as part of the U.S. Special Operations Command. Their mission is to plan and conduct special missions in support of U.S. policy and objectives.
