Army-2021: Kalashnikov AK-12 assault rifle to become basic weapon for Russian troops.

The AK-12 assault rifle developed by the Kalashnikov Group (part of Russia’s Rostec state hi-tech corporation) replacing the AK-74 will become the basic weapon for Russian troops in the coming years, the group’s press office told TASS at the Army 2021 international military and technical forum.

According to the press office, the Kalashnikov Group has started to produce upgraded AK-12 assault rifles. "The AK-12’s final design developed following its operational evaluation by troops was shown at the Army 2020 forum. Now the Kalashnikov Group is producing this AK model taking into account all improvements," the press office said.

The AK-12 has been upgraded to be able to use round-the-clock sights : "The AK-12 provides for its 24/7 use and features good ergonomics and fire accuracy. Its design has been fully tested and the customer confirms this. The assault rifle is planned to become the basic weapon of the Russian soldier for decades to come. The experience of its operation by troops confirms that the assigned task has been fully accomplished," the press office said.

During the Army 2021 forum, the Kalashnikov Group signed contracts with the Russian Defense Ministry for the delivery of a batch of AK-12 assault rifles.
