Slovakia had launched a call for tenders for the acquisition of 152 new tracked armored IFVs (Infantry Fighting Vehicles) to replace its fleet of BVP-1 and BVP-2, which are a local production of Soviet-made BMP-1 and BMP-2.

In May 2022, the "CZ Defence" magazine announced that Slovakia has conducted evaluation tests of three candidates including the German company Rheinmetall with Lynx KF41, GDELS (General Dynamics European Land Systems) with the ASCOD, and BAE Systems from Sweden with the latest generation of CV90.

On May 26, 2022, BAE Systems Hägglunds announced via its Twitter account that CV90 Mk IV has been recommended by the Slovak Ministry of Defense as the preferred candidate for the procurement of a new tracked armored IFV for the Slovak Army.

The CV90 Mk IV represents the fifth generation in the CV90 tracked armored IFV family. It combines improved battlefield speeds and handling with an upgraded Electronic Architecture to support future growth capabilities.

The CV90 Mk IV is a completely new concept and technology of IFV that was developed based on the return of experience from customers using the previous versions of the CV90.

The new turret of the CV90 Mk IV features a modular design offering 30/40-, 35/50 and 120mm main guns and weapon pods for integrated Anti-Tank Guided Missiles and machine guns. The turrets are designed to support a more extensive sensor suite integration and utilize BAE Systems’ revolutionary new iFighting™ concept. The Mk IV generation is also the first Western IFV with a qualified Active Protection System.

The CV90 Mk IV includes a new Scania engine with up to 1,000 horsepower and the latest upgraded X300 heavy-duty transmission. The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVW-R) is increased from 35 tons to 37 tons, meaning users benefit from two tons’ extra payload – without a decrease in vehicle agility.
