In 2022 Germany has increased its funds for security capacity building to 2 billion Euros. These additional funds are primarily dedicated to Ukraine as well as German contributions to the European Peace Facility, from which the cost of military support measures for Ukraine can be reimbursed to EU member states.
On July 27, 2022, the Army Recognition editorial team reported that Germany approved a plan to deliver to Ukraine 30 Gepard 35mm self-propelled anti-aircraft tracked armored vehicles and 60,000 rounds of ammunition, both coming from German army stocks.
The Gepard is a mobile anti-aircraft gun system that is based on a Leopard 1 tank tracked armored chassis that entered into service with the German army in 1976 that it is no longer in service with the German army, but an undisclosed number of Gepard would have an undetermined number of vehicles are still in German army stocks.
The Gepard consists of a turret armed with two Oerlikon Contraves 35-mm KDA cannon mounted on a tracked chassis of the German-made Leopard 1 tank. These have a cyclic fire rate of 550 rounds, per barrel, per minute, with an effective firing range of about 3,500 m and more than 4,500 m with FAPDS (Frangible Armor Piercing Discarding Sabot) ammunition.
The Gepard can work as a fully autonomous air defense system thanks to its S-band search radar mounted at the rear of the turret and a Ku-band Doppler tracking radar fitted at the front of the turret which are able to detect and track aerial targets at a maximum range of 15 km.
