The Iraqi Minister of Defense, Juma Inad, during a ceremony to lay the foundation stone for the new Iraqi Air Defense Command Operations Center, explained that the new operations center will be linked to the new radar systems, which were agreed upon with the French company Thales.
The SAMP/T, also called Mamba in the French army, is a theatre antimissile system designed to protect the battlefield and sensitive tactical sites (such as airports and seaports) against all current and future airborne threats, including cruise missiles, manned and unmanned aircraft and tactical ballistic missiles in the 600 km range class. The SAMP/T is produced by Eurosam, a 50-50 joint venture between MBDA and Thales. Its key components are the Aster 30 interceptor and Arabel multi-function radar.
Iraqi Minister of Defense Juma Inad indicated that the new operations center will work upon the arrival of the new American radar system TBS 7 (Time Based Separation) and that his ministry is exerting efforts to obtain medium and short-range radar systems to complete air sovereignty over all parts of the country.
Air Defense Commander, Maan al-Saadi, revealed that two long-range radar systems will be delivered to Iraq soon. He added that long-range radar systems have been delivered to Iraq already and will be deployed in the southern governorate of Al-Qadisiyah and the western governorate of Anbar.
