The TOS-1A heavy flamethrowers have been manufactured taking into account a number of design changes. So, they are equipped with modern launching equipment, which made it possible to increase the convenience of the crew members of the BM-1A combat vehicle and reduce the time for completing the assigned combat mission. In addition, one of the BM-1As sent to the troops successfully passed firing tests at a training ground in the European part of Russia.
“The heavy flamethrower system is the pride of the company. Our designers are working on various options for its modernization so that it meets the most modern requirements and performs its functions efficiently, "said Igor Lobov, General Director of Omsktransmash.
On November 16, 2020, Army Recognition reported that industrial enterprises were upgrading TOS-1A heavy flamethrowers: “The upgraded combat vehicles are better protected against tank fire, have a higher range and fire precision, as well as destruction space by one projectile”, the Russian Defense Ministry said. New unguided rocket-propelled projectiles and modern sights decrease the consumption of munitions and the time of the mission.
It was reported that the Central Military District would receive new TOS-1A projectiles with a 1.5-2.5-times longer range. They can destroy targets from a safe distance from the adversary, thus increasing survivability and decreasing the chance of retaliation. In July 2020, Rosoboronexport and Omsktransmash demonstrated TOS-1A to foreign customers at Staratel range in Nizhny Tagil.
TOS-1A weighs 44.3 tons and has a crew of three men. It is mounted with a 24-tube launcher. The minimal fire range is 400 meters and maximum — 6000 meters. The time of a full salvo is 6 seconds. The munition is an unguided missile with an incendiary or thermobaric warhead. The mixture creates an aerosol cloud which triggers fuel and air explosion. TOS-1A is specifically effective in mountains and fortifications.
The TOS-1A heavy flamethrower system is a modernized version of the TOS-1 combat vehicle, which was put into service in 1995. Today it is in demand not only in Russia but also abroad.
