Russian Ministry of Defense forms mobile air defense reserve in Southern Military District.

| 2022

The southern direction, along with the western one, is becoming one of the most dangerous in terms of a possible attack, TopWar.ru writes. The Russian Ministry of Defense has then decided to fortify the south of the country, including cover from air strikes. For this purpose, mobile air defense reserves will be formed as part of the Southern Military District.

New units and subunits of the mobile reserve will appear in the Southern Military District, the decision to form them has already been made by the Ministry of Defense, although nothing has been said about the timing yet. It is possible that the first units of the mobile reserve will appear in the Southern Military District already this year, TopWar.ru reports.

The main weapon system that will be in service with the mobile reserve will be the Pantsir air defense missile system, most probably the Pantsir-S1 version although no precision about the variant(s) to be deployed has been provided. The main task of the units will be to advance to areas of a probable enemy strike and protect potential targets from drones and cruise missiles.

According to Izvestia, citing a military source, the tactics of using mobile air defense reserves are currently being worked out, exercises are being conducted with the involvement of the Pantsir air defense missile system, including at the Ashuluk training ground with live firing. Anti-aircraft gunners are trained to defeat not only aerial but also ground targets.

The Southern Military District covers the Central Asian direction, the Caucasus, the Black Sea and Ukraine, where it is now very restless. In the Southern Military District, a 38,000-strong military reserve force (BARS) has been formed, which makes it possible to form new units from trained reservists in the event of the outbreak of hostilities.
