Texelis entered into a strategic partnership with QinetiQ in 2021 to jointly deliver in-wheel Electric Hub Drive technology to the military armoured vehicle market. Texelis' solution combines QinetiQ’s in-wheel Electric Hub Drive technology with its T750 suspension system into a traction drive system as part of an advanced electric powertrain architecture.

QinetiQ’s wheel hub technology combines electric propulsion with mechanical and regenerative braking into a small package inside the wheel itself. It offers high performance (55kW continuous power per hub), advanced mobility solution in a 20” wheel rim with a common architecture for simplified integration.

The Texelis T750 suspension system, proven as part of the French Army’s Light VBMR (Serval) vehicle programme, will form the basis of the vehicle’s hybrid driveline. This approach offers advanced acceleration and agility, with the high torque demands for hill climb and obstacle crossing handled by the range-changing gearbox.

“We are pleased to take this next step, working with the Land Systems arm of ST Engineering, toward the electrification of protected mobility vehicle fleets, together with our partner QinetiQ,” Jean Vandel, Managing Director Defence at Texelis, said. “We are seeing a dramatic acceleration of the need for reducing emissions and reducing fossil fuel dependency among military forces, and our flexible, platform-agnostic electric powertrain architecture provides a low-risk, highly capable solution for combat vehicles.”
