On April 14, 2022, Army Recognition reported that the United States will deliver new military equipment and weapons including towed howitzers, artillery radars, Switchblade munitions, Javelin anti-tank missiles, tracked APCs (Armored Personnel Carrier), medical equipment, body armor, and helmets.
Citing a list published by the U.S. Department of Defense on April 2022, the United States will deliver 200 M113 tracked APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) to Ukraine.
The M113 is tracked APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) that was developed in 1956 to provide a new light armored personnel carrier for U.S. army armor and infantry units capable of amphibious and air-drop operations. The M113 entered in service with the U.S. Army in 1963. The M113A3 is the latest variant that is in service with the U.S. armed forces.
The design of the M113 consists of an all-welded aluminum armor hull with the driver position on the front left side of the hull with the engine compartment of its right. The commander sits at the rear of the engine compartment and has a single hatch. The rear part of the vehicle can accommodate up to 11 infantrymen in APC configuration. It is one of the most popular tracked APCs in the world and more than 40 variants have been developed. The hull of the M113 provides protection against the firing of small arms and artillery shell splinters.
The M113A3 is the latest variant in the M113 family that entered into service with the U.S. Army in 1987. The vehicle has many new improvements including a new Detroit Diesel 6V-53T turbocharged engine developing 275hp coupled to an Allison cross-drive X-200-4 hydrostatic four-speed transmission, external fuel tanks, a variable-speed cooling fan drive and hardware for mounting the spall liners and the external add-on armor.
The M113A3 has a combat weight of 12,150 kg with a crew of three including a driver, commander, and gunner. The roof of the vehicle is fitted with a circular ring mount that can be armed with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun. It can run at a maximum road speed of 60 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 480 km.
