US plans to deliver Ukraine with smart bombs JDAM Joint Direct Attack Munition.

According to information published by "The Washington Post" on December 14, 2022, the United States plans to send a new generation of smart bombs to Ukraine, called Joint Direct Attack Munition, or JDAM that can be launched from a fighter or bomber aircraft.

After this week's announcement of the preparation of a plan for sending Patriot air defense missile systems to Ukraine, the U.S. Government continues to strengthen its support for Ukraine with the shipment of the latest generation weapons. In its support for Ukraine in the face of the invasion of the country by Russian forces, the United States would announce new military aid packages for Ukraine soon.

The Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) program is a U.S. military program that was jointly by the U.S. Air and Navy forces to upgrade the existing inventory of general-purpose bombs by integrating the bombs with a field-installed guidance kit equipped with a Global Positioning System Aided Inertial Navigation System.

JDAM provides the capability to accurately and autonomously attack fixed, or relocatable, land and maritime targets under adverse weather conditions from medium and high altitudes.

The JDAM improves the capability of conventional bombs via a strap-on inertial guidance kit with Global Positioning System (GPS) updates. The kit provides autonomous adverse weather delivery accuracy from five meters Circular Error Probable (CEP) when GPS is available to the weapon, to less than 30 meters when GPS is absent or jammed. The laser sensor kit added to the JDAM weapon kit provides the ability to attack moving targets when designated by airborne or ground laser.

The JDAM enables combat aircraft to employ weapons accurately against stationary ground targets. It enables multiple weapon releases against single or multiple targets on a single pass.

The Global Positioning System (GPS)-aided Inertial Navigation System (INS) and PLGS of the JDAM are combined with a tail control system for guidance. Target coordinates can be loaded into the aircraft before takeoff, manually before weapon release, and automatically entered through target designation with onboard aircraft sensors. This information is transferred from the aircraft to the weapon prior to release.
