US proposes to supply Taiwan with up to 100 Patriot PAC-3 surface-to-air missiles.

According to information published by the "Taiwan News" website on December 6, 2022, the United States has proposed to supply Taiwan with up to 100 Patriot PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missiles and related equipment.

Citing information published by the International press agency Bloomberg, the proposal was made under the provisions of a 2010 U.S. foreign military sale and would have a total value of approximately US$2.81 billion.

On January 29, 2010, the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States of 114 Patriot Advanced Capability (PAC-3) missiles, 3 AN/MPQ-65 Radar Sets and other related equipment and services. The estimated cost is $2.81 billion.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States requested the possible sale of 114 PATRIOT Advanced Capability (PAC-3) missiles, 3 AN/MPQ-65 Radar Sets, 1 AN/MSQ-133 Information and Coordination Centrals, 1 Tactical Command Station, 3 Communication Relay Groups, 3 AN/MSQ-132 Engagement Control Stations, 26 M902 Launching Stations, 5 Antenna Mast Groups, 1 Electronic Power Plant III (EPP), battery and battalion maintenance equipment, prime movers, generators, electrical power units, personnel training and equipment, trailers, communication equipment, tool and test sets, spare and repair parts, publications and technical documentation, Quality Assurance Team support services, U.S. Government and contractor engineering and logistics support services, and other related elements of logistics support.

Today the Taiwanese armed forces have 72+ MIM-104F Patriot PAC-3 and 50 Tien Kung II surface-to-air defense missile systems. Citing a military source, currently, Taiwan operates the Patriot Advanced Capability 2 (PAC-2) and PAC-3 Guided Enhancement Missiles (GEM) systems.

The PAC-3 MSE (Missile Segment Enhancement) missile has increased battlespace defense capabilities and improved lethality. The system is able to detect, track and engage short-range ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. The PAC-3 missile can destroy ballistic missiles at a range of up to 30 km.
